About

A sophisticated and virtuosic pianist born in Hong Kong, Alvina Yang Yuk Yu’s playing is characterised by her translucent touch, sensitive nuances and thoughtful interpretations. Her repertoire choices exhibit dedication in exploring gems in piano literature and beyond, alongside frequently performed repertoire. She is particularly interested in searching for a wide array of timbres and colours on the piano, which also leads her to performing and writing transcriptions.

Alvina completed her Master’s Degree in piano performance with Distinction at the Royal Academy of Music with Ian Fountain, supported by a full scholarship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. She was awarded DipRAM for her outstanding final recital, as well as Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM) in piano pedagogy. She obtained her Bachelor of Music (Honours) Degree with First Class Honours from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, studying with Gabriel Kwok. Prior to that, she studied with Yim Wan on the Academy’s junior music programme in her earlier years.

She was a recipient of the HKSAR Government Home Affairs Bureau Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarship, a full scholarship for her Bachelor’s Degree, as well as Pearl River Kayserburg Scholarship, The Helena May Scholarship and Tom Lee Music Scholarship. She has performed in venues across Europe and Asia, and was interviewed by Radio Television Hong Kong with her performance recorded for public broadcast. Some of her recent competition successes include the First Prize at the Pacific Stars International Piano Competition (United States), First Runner-up at the Norah Sande Award,

Gold Prize and Chopin Prize at the 2nd Joyeux Music International Piano Competition (Singapore), First Prize at the 81st Steinway & Sons International Youth Piano Competition, among others.
